Shanghai, PR China, April 20, 2003--Dolby Laboratories announced that the first
vehicle in China to feature a factory-installed entertainment system with Dolby®
Pro Logic® II technology, the new Volvo XC90, will be on display at this year's
Shanghai Auto Show. The XC90, the Motor Trend Magazine 2003 Sport/Utility of the
Year, which was enthusiastically received at its official debut at the North American
International Auto Show in January 2002, boasts a surround sound system with Dolby
Pro Logic II technology, rear-seat audio/video options, and 13 speakers, including an 8-
inch, 140-watt active subwoofer for improved bass reproduction.
"Volvo is a recognized leader in automotive entertainment. Its XC90 is designed to take
the SUV class to a new level, so it is not surprising that Volvo is also taking in-car
entertainment to the next level," said Patrick Artiaga, Director, Automotive and
Broadcast Marketing, Dolby Laboratories. "As the first production vehicle to
incorporate Dolby Pro Logic II surround sound technology, the Volvo XC90 anticipates
the future of in-car entertainment systems. We are delighted to see the migration of
surround sound entertainment from the home to the car, where Dolby technologies offer
a host of new possibilities and improvements."
Dolby Pro Logic II is one of the key technologies--along with Dolby Digital and Dolby
Headphone--that comprise Dolby's comprehensive Surround in Motion™ program.
Dolby Pro Logic II represents the most natural-sounding matrix decoding technology
for transforming standard two-channel stereo into multichannel surround sound. It
works with any stereo audio format, including CD, FM or satellite radio, cassette, MP3,
and MiniDisc. It can be incorporated into automotive sound systems at the factory, as
Volvo has done, or through a variety of aftermarket products. Pro Logic II helps bridge
the entertainment gap between two-channel audio and the full-fledged surround sound
of discrete 5.1-channel systems.
Volvo set a new standard in automotive entertainment in 1997 with its C70 sports coupe
featuring Dolby Pro Logic surround sound. Even before the introduction of the XC90,
Volvo received accolades for in-car sound, including the Best of the Best 2001 award
from the Robb Report for the company's premium in-car sound systems (all of which
include Dolby Pro Logic technology).
"As one of the world's leading premium car manufacturers, Volvo is committed to
providing superior automotive entertainment options, so it was a natural choice to select
Dolby Pro Logic II for the new XC90," said Mr. Ong Eng Seong, President, Volvo Cars
of China. "In a further enhancement to our multichannel audio systems, Dolby Pro
Logic II enables the driver and passengers to enjoy music in remarkable multichannel
surround sound, thereby improving the overall Volvo driving experience."
Shipments of the Volvo XC90 within China begin on the official launch date of
April 20, 2003.
"XC90 first-year sales in China will be low--not due to low demand but rather due to
high demand worldwide. Therefore, China has only been allocated a small quota this
year," Mr. Ong Eng Seong added.
