BesTV Broadcasts Dolby Digital Plus Audio for Next-Generation HDTV Service in China
Dolby Laboratories, Inc. (NYSE:DLB) today announced that BesTV, China's
premier HD IPTV live and video-on-demand (VOD) service provider, is
using Dolby® Digital Plus technology to deliver home
theater—quality multichannel audio in Guangdong Province, and plans to
do so in other areas of China in the future.
"BesTV is devoted to delivering the best new features to our customers
for a better user experience," said Mr. Li Huai Yu, General Manager of
BesTV. "We hope to offer our customers an immersing entertainment
experience at home and to advance IPTV industry development in China."
The rich, multichannel audio enabled by Dolby Digital Plus is a
high-quality complement to BesTV's extensive choice of entertainment and
playback features, such as pause, fast forward, and rewind.
"By collaborating with BesTV, Dolby is helping to deliver an exceptional
HD audio experience that Chinese consumers have come to expect with
their home cinema systems," said Mahesh Sundaram, Vice President, Asia
Pacific, Dolby Laboratories. "We look forward to assisting BesTV in
setting new benchmarks for video and audio in next-generation
broadcasting through a new level of speed, quality, and efficiency."
Dolby Digital Plus has been adopted by the world's leading TV and
set-top box manufacturers to deliver surround sound for next-generation
television. In Europe, France, Italy, England, Spain, and Sweden have
all established Dolby Digital Plus as the broadcast audio standard for
HDTV services. In China, Dolby has been committed to its implementation
licensing programs for local encoder, chipset, and set-top box (STB)
manufacturers. As of October 2010, 30 system licensees are participating
in the Dolby Digital Plus broadcast licensing program in China.
About Dolby Digital Plus
Dolby Digital Plus is a scalable technology designed specifically to
meet the evolving demands of content delivery. For broadcast and
streamed entertainment media applications where bandwidth is at a
premium, Dolby Digital Plus is measurably more efficient than Dolby
Digital, allowing broadcast operators to deliver more HD programs. Dolby
Digital Plus extends the capabilities of Dolby Digital, optimizing sound
quality and efficiency for a richer, more compelling audio experience.
It enables lower bit rates, support for up to 7.1 channels, and advanced
services including bitstream mixing. Whether the application is for
terrestrial television, IPTV, cable, or direct broadcast satellite
(DBS), Dolby Digital Plus is the next-generation audio solution when
bit-rate efficiency and backward compatibility are equally important.
